Modem Phone Numbers
Introduction:
Before you proceed, you will need a TERMINAL EMULATOR
for your system. Please click on one of the following links
if you need more information about terminal emulators for
MS-DOS ,
MacIntosh , or
Microsoft
Windows (any version) .
The CS Dept. offers free command-line dialup access to the student
servers using a modem (note: this is not the same as Dial-Up
Networking under Windows). The modem lines listed below are purely
for remote shell access. The following is a set of
brief instructions on how to dial into the UNIX LAN. For more detail,
read the UNIX Short Guide , available in the WSU
bookstore.
Phone Number: 978-3159 (5 lines, 56K US Robotics)

If you want eight-bit clean connections (for Zmodem, EMACS users, etc)
, the dialog is somewhat different:
- Dial number with your terminal emulator
set to 8 bits, No Parity, 1 stop bit, terminal set to
VT100.
- Wait for login prompt! Do NOT hit Enter/CR to wake the system
up
- Enter "rstudent" at the login/username prompt (no quotes!)
- Enter "rstudent" at the password prompt (no quotes!)
- At the host prompt, enter the machine name you wish to use
(example: "sisko" or "kira" (no quotes!))
- Press Enter when it asks for your password. It will complain
about invalid login. Ignore it.
- Enter your username and password when prompted for it.
- You are in.
- Type in "vt100" at the UNIX prompt. (no quotes!)
- See the UNIX Short Guide for more details.
Problems:
Some software does not do VT100 emulation correctly
(esp. certain Windows packages) . The software that comes with your
modem is usually in this class. Some machines also
have improperly configured modems as well.
Note to users who want Internet at home. Please look at the
Internet
Providers page.
Note to Zmodem users: Please read the UNIX Short Guide, available in
the WSU Bookstore! There is a section in there for you.
