LINUX Features for Computer Science Majors
LINUX has several features that make it useful for Computer
Science Majors.
- LINUX is UNIX-like. It is so UNIX-like, you will be able to
practice your UNIX assignments at home without dialing in. Also,
since most CS classes use LINUX, you can develop your assignment and
transfer it to WSU when done.
- LINUX comes with lots of compilers and editors (CC, C++, Objective
C, Fortran-to-C, Pascal-to-C, LISP, EMACS, vi, pico, etc.).
- LINUX has Xwindows and multitasking. You can be editing in one
window while dialing into WSU or your provider in another.
- LINUX comes with source code, so you can modify it if you like.
- LINUX allows you to learn about many things having to do with
system and network management.
- LINUX is free. You can put it on as many machines as you like.
