UNIX Accounts

Who can have an account?

The Computer Science UNIX systems are for the use of students enrolled in Computer Science classes. You usually get your account by enrolling in a CS class. Once the class is over, the UNIX auditing system (see below) decides if you get to keep your account or not.

Requests for UNIX accounts MUST include the student's student ID number, full name, and major.

How long will the account last?

As of March 31, 1997, a UNIX account auditing system has been established. The auditing system warns users about coming account expiration. In general, users taking CS classes get to keep their CS accounts. The auditing system (working from enrollment data) takes into account your major and other factors in deciding if your account should be deleted. You will get a notice about account expiration in your electronic mail (about three months in advance, one per month or so).
