Research Paper Topic -------------------- "A Comparison of Mechanisms for Improving TCP Performance over Wireless Links" Name : Swapna Sunkara Course : cs898T Instructor : Dr.Chang Major Goals : ------------ - To discuss and compare several schemes designed to improve the performance of TCP in wireless networks - To classify the schemes into three broad categories - To discuss about Congestion Control - Conclusion - Future Work Scope : ------ Reliable transport protocols such as TCP are tuned to perform well in the traditional networks where packet losses occur mostly becuase of congestion. TCP is known to have poor performance over unreliable wireless links where packet losses due to transmission errors are misinterpreted as indications of network congestion. In this paper we will see that the significant losses are due to bit errors and handoffs. This paper also speaks about the different approaches to improve the performance of TCP in wireless networks. In this paper the effectiveness of different schemes are examined, compared and the degree of performance improvement due to each are analyzed. In conclusion this paper demonstrates that selective acknowledgements and explicit loss notifications result in significant performance improvements.
