Carmine DeFazio CS898t - Wireless/Mobile Communications Dr. Chang Research Paper Project Proposal TOPIC: ------ An Overview of Wireless Security MAJOR GOALS: ------------ * A historical outline of wireless security. 1. Its' past and its basis. 2. Its' present and its basis. 3. Its' possible future. * The protocols and technology behind wireless security. 1. Their strengths and weaknesses. 2. Current and past security concerns and what has been already addressed. 3. The trends in current research for security improvement. * Consumer and business demands. 1. Expectations about security. 2. Concerns and fears about security holes. 2. Technological, societal, and economic effects of security failures. * Developments in the field of wireless security. 1. What they are. 2. What problems they solve. 3. What still needs to be fixed. * Steps that can be taken to improve wireless security. SCOPE: ------ This paper will be an overview of wireless security. Its' technologies and protocols(past, present, and future) will be examined giving an explanation of each of their strengths and weaknesses. An account of how these strengths and weaknesses have affected society, business, and wireless computing technology will be put forth. Giving details on how past weaknesses brought about new protocols and technologies used today and how they are driving current research trends to address new security problems, possible security problems, and future fears. A discussion of how wireless and mobile users can improve security themselves with the current protocols and technologies will also be put forth. Wireless security is a very important and priority one area of research. All who use or make the technology should be knowledgable of the concepts behind the scenes to some degree. This will lead to greater innovation in the field and possibly stave off any future personal or societal disasters caused by lack security. REFERENCES: ----------- William A.
