General Information
The Department of Computer Science at Wichita State University offers a wide choice of courses and research opportunities in areas such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, databases, networking, operating systems, programming languages, software engineering and symbolic computation. In order to perform graduate study in the Department, students must be admitted to some category of study in the Graduate School.
Categories available for graduate study
- MS degree status: Students in this category undergo a combination of advanced courses, electives and research, leading to the completion of the MS degree requirements. The goal of the MS degree program is to provide a level of concentration suitable for advanced professional work and/or doctoral study in computer science. In recent years, the program has enjoyed a 100% success rate in terms of its graduates obtaining career-oriented jobs or admission into doctoral programs. Admission into the program is now possible for candidates with little or no computer science background. Moreover, the entire program can be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis through evening course work.
- Nondegree A status: This category is for students who do not want to seek a graduate degree. Students in this category can take any graduate course, for which they have the prerequisites, for professional advancement or personal satisfaction.
- Nondegree B status: Similar to nondegree A status, except that students are restricted to enrollment in courses numbered below 800.
While the MS degree status is open to domestic as well as international students (on F-1 visa), the nondegree categories are not available to international students. Students originally admitted to a nondegree category may later request a transfer to the degree status. A maximum of 12 hours of graduate credit taken while in a nondegree category may be counted towards the degree program requirements.
